Transoceanic, a Louisiana based company, announced the opening of its first Iraqi office in April and currently has two branches, one in Baghdad and another in Mosul, that provide 24/7 shipping services. The Iraqi branches are supported by its other operations located throughout the Middle East region.

Mr. Robert Whittaker leads the operations in Iraq, under the regional direction of Mr. Kamal Sidawi and a team of Transoceanic managers. Transoceanic is utilizing local Iraqis to staff its operations. In Baghdad it employs 15 Iraqis and in Mosul an additional 12, as well as a number of Iraqi personnel in strategic points across the country.

Transoceanic reports that the U.S. Government, in particular the Iraq Investment and Reconstruction Task Force, did assist in executing this business opportunity. Informational meetings and contacts with the Task Force were extremely helpful to the company. “The Task Force has been pro-active in facilitating our entry into Iraq. I’ve been very impressed with them, their knowledge of the area and the support given to businessmen”, said Tony Hendey, Transoceanic’s Director of Government Services.

Transoceanic views Iraq as a long-term business investment. According to Mr. Hendey, Transoceanic sees Iraq as a fertile area for future operations and will aggressively continue to develop its market there and looks forward to continued assistance from Commerce.
